How do I Process China Union Pay cards with CyberSource

Answer

What is China Union Pay?

China Union Pay (CUP) aka UnionPay is the only domestic bank card scheme in The People's Republic of China and is issued by some 14 members of the UnionPay card association throughout mainland China.  Merchants should be aware that CUP cards generally have limits put into place for card-not present or e-commerce transactions by the issuers which may differ from the cardholder’s actual card limit which can potentially limit the use of this card type for high ticket items.

Types of Cards

UnionPay supports cards using both credit and debit card schemes, both of which can be used in a card-not-present environment and are supported by CyberSource.

Cards can be designated as single currency or dual currency cards.  Only Chinese Yuan (RMB) single currency cards possessing "62" as the leading digits and bearing a China UnionPay logo in the bottom right-hand corner of the card are considered the UnionPay card type. Cards containing both a UnionPay logo and a Visa/MasterCard/American Express logo (co-branded) support both Chinese Yuan (RMB) and a foreign currency, but are considered the co-branded Visa/MasterCard/American Express card type.

If consumers are not sure whether a specific card is a single or dual currency card, they can check with their issuer.

Processing UnionPay Cards through CyberSource

As mentioned in the Credit Card Services Using the Simple Order APIand Credit Card Services Using the SCMP API Global Payment Services documentation, China Union pay and Discover announced a strategic alliance In 2005 whereby China Union Pay cards will be routed to the Discover Network.

As a result of this alliance:

  • If you have been accepting Discover but not China Union Pay, you are now able to accept China Unionpay cards.
  • If you have been accepting China UnionPay but not Discover, you are now able to accept Discover cards.

Technical Details

UnionPay cards should be submitted to CyberSource as the Discover card (card_type=004).

Consult the Developer Resources documentation related to your CyberSource integration method for details pertaining to sending the card_type value to Cybersource:

Merchants may identify the UnionPay card type based on the Issuer Identification Number (IIN) aka BIN ranges which are represented by the following for Discover and CUP cards:
